Imagine the most disciplined soldier in gaming riding shotgun with a drug lord, bullets chewing up a Paris street, and not a single friendly face left to call. That’s the pitch for Modern Warfare 4, and it’s a stranger one than Call of Duty usually sells. Captain John Price has spent years as the series’ moral anchor. This time he’s a fugitive willing to make a deal with the devil to finish a job.

If you’ve only seen the trailers, here’s what’s actually going on, who’s chasing whom, and whether the Paris stretch of the campaign is worth your pre-order.

Modern Warfare 4 Release Date, Platforms, and Early Access

Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s developed by Infinity Ward and is the fourth and final entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series. That “final” matters. The campaign is closing out a story that began with the 2019 reboot, so it carries more narrative weight than a typical annual release. 

There’s a wrinkle that affects when you can play. Digital pre-orders unlock the Campaign early, starting October 16, one week before launch, while Multiplayer and DMZ arrive with the full release on October 23. If you’re reading this before the 23rd, the story is already playable for anyone who pre-ordered, and spoilers are circulating. Consider yourself warned.

The campaign itself spans 16 missions across South Korea, North Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. That’s a lot of geography for one game, and it explains why the story is split into two threads: Price’s revenge run on one side, and a war on the Korean Peninsula on the other.

Why Price Is Working With a Cartel Boss

Start with where Price ends up emotionally, because it drives everything. In this game he’s furious and more willing than ever to get his hands dirty in his pursuit of Makarov’s allies. He’s also wanted by the very people he used to work with, which leaves him with almost no support network.

That’s how he lands with Valeria Garza, the Las Almas cartel leader. Long-time players will remember her as an antagonist in Modern Warfare 2. Now she’s on his side, played by María Elisa Camargo. Per the story summaries, Price’s reason is practical: he needs a route to the Archer (voiced by Mads Mikkelsen), another threat linked to Makarov, and Valeria’s operation is his way in. Her motives are not noble. She’s a notorious cartel leader trying to get paid for delivering a weapon to the bad guy.

This is the most interesting choice Infinity Ward has made with Price in years. For most of the reboot he’s been the steady veteran who says the right thing in the briefing room. Here, the series is testing how far that steadiness bends. When Valeria tells him he’s still a good guy right after a brutal chase scene, it’s fair to wonder whether she’s reassuring him or working with him. 

Inside the Paris Mission, “Traffic”

The Paris stretch is Mission 6 of 16, titled “Traffic,” and it’s set three days before the North Korean invasion. You play as Price the whole way. The setup is simple: Price and Valeria’s crew escort a locked case across the city, and everything that can go wrong does.

It’s less a war between cartels and more a pile-up of pressure from every direction. The official mission briefing frames it as a meetup in Paris that turns deadly when cartel rivals turn the city into a warzone. In practice, according to walkthroughs, French Mafia footmen impersonate the Paris Police Prefecture and set up blockades, and then the real police get involved too. So Price is fighting rivals pretending to be cops while actual cops close in. It’s a mess by design.

Two details stand out for players. First, this is a driving mission as much as a shooting one. When Activision released the “Campaign First Look: Traffic” video, it showed playable vehicle sections across the streets of Paris. Vehicle segments in Call of Duty campaigns have historically been hit or miss, so this is the part I’d watch most closely. Second, the city is crowded. Paris is packed with civilians, and hitting one ends the attempt with a checkpoint restart. That’s a small rule with a big effect, because it forces you to drive like you’re trying to escape, not like you’re in a demolition derby.

One more thing the mission is clearly designed to do: tension. At the point where the campaign stops being a war story for about twenty minutes and becomes a getaway movie. A campaign that spends all sixteen missions in the same register gets tiring, and a heist-flavored detour in the middle is the kind of pacing change the series needs.

Where Task Force 141 Actually Fits

Task Force 141 is the unit Price built, and it’s still the emotional center of the franchise. But in this game it’s a hunting party, not a team. Ghost and Gaz are sent to capture or kill Price, which turns the franchise’s central friendship into the campaign’s central conflict. The confrontation is built around a nighttime SAS raid in Mumbai.

It means Paris is the setup and Mumbai is the collision. Paris is where we see how deep Price’s alliance with Valeria runs, and it’s where Laswell, the CIA contact who still has a line to him, realizes what he’s doing. The details come from the story recaps. They describe Laswell telling Price he’s on the wrong side of a cartel weapons deal as the mission wraps up. She isn’t wrong, and Price knows it.

The “former friends on opposite sides” setup is the right call, but it only works if the campaign gives Ghost and Gaz real reasons for what they do.

Why Paris Hits Different in Modern Warfare 4

Paris isn’t a random pick. The city has been a recurring pressure point for the series. It’s one of the core multiplayer maps in the 2019 reboot, per community wiki listings, and the original 2011 Modern Warfare 3 is remembered for its Paris sequence, including the Eiffel Tower coming down. One report on the Traffic reveal noted that the story of the classic game, which featured the destruction of the Eiffel Tower, echoes the story of Paris in the new project.

I’d treat that last point as a reasonable comparison, not a confirmed callback. What’s worth saying is that Paris is a good stage for a story about a man crossing lines. It’s dense, it’s beautiful, and it’s full of people who aren’t part of the fight. A chase through narrow streets with a cartel boss next to you is a different kind of pressure than a trench in Korea. It’s personal, which suits what Price is going through.

What Early Reviews Are Saying About the Campaign

GameSpot’s campaign verdict is that Modern Warfare 4 goes back to basics to properly finish its story. That same piece describes the structure as an over-the-top, globetrotting affair across New York City, Paris, and Mumbai, in addition to several parts of Korea. It also says the Price-and-cartel team-up makes for chaotic gunfights through Paris and engaging banter between the characters.

More reviews will land as launch day approaches, and it’s worth checking Metacritic and OpenCritic before you commit, especially if you’re deciding based on the campaign alone. 

Should You Pre-Order For Modern Warfare 4?

Buy digitally now if the story is the point. The early access means you can finish it before spoilers take over your feed. Considering how much of the story is already being discussed publicly, that’s not a small perk.

Wait until October 23 if multiplayer is your reason to buy. Multiplayer and DMZ don’t arrive until launch day, skip the Paris hype if you want a squad-based Task Force 141 mission. That’s not what this is. Paris is Price’s solo-and-cartel chapter, and the squad drama belongs to the Mumbai section of the story.
